Astrea Snails

Astrea Snails
Astrea snails,
Astrea sp.

Native to: Different species are collected in different tropical intertidal areas.

Description: These snails typically have a white cone shaped shell which is a part of their anatomy and will grow with them. There are also some however that have a star shaped appearance that are occasionally found in the hobby.

Feeding: As long as there is not fierce competition for algae in the tank, these animals should do fine for years without any additional food being added. Some holding facilities will add sheets of dry nori to feed these snails if too many are present in a tank for any length of time.

Special Notes: Occasionally if conditions are just right you will see these snails attempting to reproduce in the system. You will know if they are attempting to reproduce if you see them releasing what looks like a white cloud into the water in several squirts. Although the chance the offspring will survive to maturity is extremely low in the aquarium due to predation and the life support equipment attached to aquarium.
